Sam Peckinpah and Colonel Potter (the relatively respected commander in “M*A*S*H”) wouldn’t seem to have much in common, but both of them listed this 1946 John Ford film as their favorite western. And Ingmar Bergman singled out Henry Fonda’s self-satisfied (and seated) porch dance as one of his favorite screen moments. So Film Forum is in good company in embracing this charming, elegiac western, which culminates with Wyatt Earp (Fonda) and his consumptive frenemy Doc Holliday (Victor Mature) confronting those no-good Clantons at the OK Corral. Filmmakers have had their way with that gunfight for decades now, but Ford is the only director to have actually discussed it (or claimed to have discussed it) with Earp itself, back when Ford was an assistant prop boy in the silent-movie era.
